Exhibition: September 15 – December 3, 2011
Ten years have passed since Simon Norfolk’s last trip to Afghanistan, seemingly a lifetime of change for a country defined by continuous unrest. Yet we are presented with a study of how little has changed. “Burke + Norfolk” is a series of new pictures that respond and re-imagine images by celebrated 19th century British Colonial photographer John Burke. Upon seeing John Burke’s documentary album composed during the Second Anglo-Afghan war in the 1870’s, Norfolk set out to revisit the Afghanistan he became familiar with in the early 2000’s, but this time under the influence and guide of Burke’s work. The result is a striking collaboration across time.
