SHARON FORMICHELLA: Dreamed in Japan
4 Mar-12 Apr 2017

“It is the result of two separate visits to Japan made a few years apart, in August 2013 and 2015, Dreamed in Japan is the story of a love affair between a photographer and a country with a distant culture and at the same time a beautiful example of how far a true passion can take one along a visionary frame of mind. The Japan of Sharon Formichella has a dreamlike and sensual quality made up of faces, bodies and animals. Her strong black and white shots, contrasting, sometimes very dramatically, are certainly due to the stylistic influences of Daido Moryama, yet respect the diarist and existential realism of the great Japanese photographer committed to an exhaustive exploration of his world. Sharon’s work is a clear observation of Japan by a western foreigner whereby strong imaginary components are added to and overlap the real situation. Photographs that embody a juxtaposition of visual planes and the extensive use of reflected images, overlapping and layered on mirrored surfaces, like, but not only, the splendid photos taken in the Kaiyukan Aquarium in Osaka, which remain the most emblematic of this presentation. Here is the dream – dreamed in Japan by Sharon and expressed in her tumultuous collection of photographs which reflect, more than in the visual style, the dramatic scenario of a vertiginous distance, to Hiroshima Mon Amour, the film masterpiece of 1959 by Alain Resnais that tells of the brief yet turbulent encounter between a French actress and a Japanese architect immediately after the war.”
