Mark Neville HOUSE OF BREAD: INSIDE BETHLEM HOSPITAL
26 September 2018 – 5 January 2019

“In this solo show, artist-photographer Mark Neville documents the everyday life of Bethlem Royal Hospital, the oldest residential psychiatric treatment facility in the UK, during this 70th anniversary year of the NHS. Bethlem Museum of the Mind commissioned this project to explore the complex nature of mental illness, treatment and recovery.

In the first six months of 2018, Neville was granted access to the Bethlem Royal Hospital, conducting interviews, attending medical lectures and getting to know staff and patients. He immersed himself in the everyday life of this leading NHS psychiatric hospital, going beneath the surface to reveal its told and untold narratives.

In a series of photographs, he captures the relationships between staff, and their environment, with a focus on documenting the portraiture of place and people. By visualising this, he aims to contribute to our understanding of recovery-based practice and those facilitating it, empower those individuals who may feel marginalised, and in turn advance the way society views mental health issues. ”
