Jul 13 – Oct 1, 2017

Opening Reception for re:collection July 13, 2017

“re:collection, a celebration of the MoCP’s vast archive of photographs, and an exploration of how we perceive images. A stream of images runs through the galleries, spanning the history of photography and offering a diverse array of approaches. Each photograph speaks to its neighboring photograph in terms of content, form or other, more subtle, connecting factors waiting to be discovered. At certain junctures, groups of images pool related ideas to address some of the most pressing social issues of our time. Each installation of images starts with a camera-less photograph, a nod to the origins of the medium and its fundamental ability to record light and shadow. The gesture is also meant to underscore the unreliability of photographic representation, which is always a translation of reality rather than a direct copy. The exhibition will include works by Evan Baden, Dawoud Bey, Lynne Cohen, Kelli Connell, Kei Ito, Deborah Luster, Danny Lyon, Rachel Papo, Christian Patterson, Guillaume Simoneau, Angela Strassheim, Penelope Umbrico, James Welling, and many others.”

Roger Ballen & Asger Carlsen – No Joke
23 June – 27 August 2017

Opening 22 June 2017

“Although Roger Ballen lives in Johannesburg and Asger Carlsen in New York, the two artists have been working together online for some four years. In their bizarre universe, Carlsen’s use of the human body as a plastic medium and Ballen’s interest in collages and the occult merge together. They create an outlandish world full of distorted bodies, manic creatures, flesh and rough sketches in black, white and grey. Both frightening and intimate, their work demonstrates fiction’s power to delve more deeply into the human spirit, compared to reality. ”

Kate Ballis: Glace Noir
July 4 – 16, 2017

Opening night- Thursday July 20, 6-8pm

“Glace Noir is a deep meditation on the sublime feminine forms of the Patagonian glaciers.

Using the classic Hollywood Day for Night technique, the glaciers appear to be illuminated by moonlight creating a subtle feminine energy. This reminds us of the ever-moving, powerful force that is the glacier.”

JEANINE MICHNA-BALES: THROUGH DARKNESS TO LIGHT PHOTOGRAPHS ALONG THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD
JUNE 23 – AUGUST 11, 2017

ARTIST TALK AND OPENING RECEPTION FRIDAY, JUNE 23, 5:30PM

“Michna-Bales’ haunting photographs follow a route from the cotton plantations of central Louisiana, through the cypress swamps of Mississippi and the plains of Indiana, north into Canada — a path of nearly fourteen hundred miles. They evoke the constant fear these night travelers must have felt of being killed or recaptured as they traversed harsh terrain and ominious river crossings guided from one secret, safe location to the next by the ever-changing clandestine group known as the Underground Railroad. The culmination of a ten-year research quest, Through Darkness to Light imagines an epic journey to liberty as it might have appeared to any freedom seeker.”

Isidro Ramirez @ Francesca Maffeo Gallery

Isidro Ramirez: Uncertain Topographies
Saturday June17th – Saturday 15th July 2017

“This body of work is situated on Mount Merapi, Yogyakarta, known to be one of the most dangerous and active volcanoes in the world, Ramirez undertook an exploration of the landscape and the relationships that humans forge around it, in a place where the volcano has posed an ever-present threat to ‘normal’ existence for nearly 500 years; Ramirez delicately records his journeys of the surrounding villages and the inhabitants’ relationship with the ‘fire mountain’.”
