Steven Hirsch @ Lilac Gallery

Steven Hirsch Gowanus: Off the Water’s Surface
November 12 through December 1, 2014

Stunning with toxic beauty, the abstract and psychedelic work on view was captured by Steven Hirsch’s lens at the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, one of America’s most polluted waterways. Revealing otherworldly waterscapes in the slime and detritus atop the tainted water, Hirsch’s painterly images swirl in a frenzy of elusive shapes and bright and explosive colors. The artist, known for his many projects depicting the fringe, states, “I would sit there on the side of the canal, and what looked like a giant painting by Monet would be there in front of me hovering on the surface of the water.”

Lilac Gallery is located at 144 Fifth Avenue, between 19th and 20th streets

Reiner Riedler: The Lifesaving Machines
October 30 – December 20, 2014

Opening Reception Thursday, Oct. 30th, 6-8pm

n his photographic series of historical and modern medical machinery, Reiner Riedler asks “Why do they look so human?” The project, initially inspired one late night as the artist waited alongside his newborn son in a neonatal intensive care unit, seeks to coax the beauty and mystery from objects normally viewed with clinical detachment. Here, Riedler addresses the unconscious dialogue between our lifesaving machines and their human counterparts twofold, seen in both the documentation of medicine’s evolving technologies and apparatuses, and through the intentional isolation of the machines from their place of use, highlighting each alone afront a pitch-black background.

November 6, 2014 – January 3, 2015

Opening reception: Thursday, November 6, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Drawn from a single private collection, the exhibition features 30 of Atget’s finest photographs that explore his ambitious, lifelong project to create a visible record of French culture. Including both iconic and previously unseen images, the works on view demonstrate how Atget’s poetic intuition and clarity of vision anticipated the sensibilities of modern art and ultimately yielded the most influential body of work produced by a single photographer in the 20th century.

Gil Kofman & Catherine Asanov @ dnj Gallery

Gil Kofman & Catherine Asanov
November 8, 2014 – January 10, 2015

Artist Reception: November 8, 2014 from 6-8pm

Gil Kofman returns to dnj Gallery for his second solo show, introducing his new project entitled “Surfers.” Kofman creates a scene for a performance. He places the figures on an empty stage, with a simple setting, and “turn(s) their leisure into something more existential and universal.” He establishes this happening with the intention of eliciting the viewer’s own responses, and thus producing one’s individual play. Kofman bleaches the highlights and darkens the figures and other shapes to create a unique, provoking image.

Catherine Asanov grew up hearing stories from her mother which examined her Russian background, and led to their discussions of Russian culture. The project “Cyrillia,” at first glance, should be placed within the genre of ‘fashion photography’, but Asanov’s images will not be. These photographs are devoted to the narrative of sharing tales, and have a deeper meaning. She feels a need to express herself and her personal history, and ultimately generates a personal response. She believes “… these stories become the basic building blocks of our cultural identity and our understanding of who we are.”

PERUGIA SOCIAL PHOTO FEST 14-23 November 2014 Perugia

International festival of photography and social therapeutic
Perugia, 14-23 November 2014

Re-create a culture of a society in the image: This is the mission to build through photography, an irreplaceable means to “make visual memory”, which is essential for communicating ideas and cultures of individuals and communities and fundamental tool for communication. Photography as a space where a dwelling is thinking. The need to understand not so much, and not only that, how to photograph, but because, since the value is not in the picture itself, but in the ‘information contained in it, in the process generator.
The photograph can then assume social significance and therapeutic. Thus was born, as a socio-cultural event centered on the role of social and therapeutic photography, Perugia Social Photo Fest which annually presents to the public the Italian and international projects that are developed in the context of Photography social and therapeutic photography. The third edition of the festival organized by the ‘LuceGrigia’ will be held in Perugia, in the Civic Museum Center for Contemporary Culture Palazzo Penna, 14 to 23 November next.

Irina Zadorozhnaia @ FotoDepartament Gallery

unnamed-4Irina Zadorozhnaia
September 27th – November 6th’ 2014

Irina Zadorozhnaia interferes into the thought space by the means of photography, trying to catch the process itself. Photography tries to catch up with the motion, investigating it’s own space and methods of image making. The final mix of abstract and literally read imagery gives birth to a visually saturated attempt to penetrate the essence of thought process and fascinating movement story, which has no answer.

Exploring the nature and appearance of beauty and particularly, the gaze of models in a setting—often under water—created for a photographic shoot. Her photographs draw the viewer in, capturing beauty while asking deeper questions. What is beauty? How does it attract the viewer? What is the context of beauty, how does is express itself, what is the nature of time in beauty, and what lies under its attractive surface?
