RENÉE C. BYER: LIVING ON A DOLLAR A DAY: THE LIVES AND FACES OF THE WORLD’S POOR

To create her work for Living On A Dollar A Day: The Lives and Faces of the World’s Poor, a ground-breaking project that is a call to action to eradicate extreme poverty, Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Renée C. Byer traveled to ten countries on four continents to illuminate the human faces of poverty. With support from The Forgotten International, a nonprofit organization based in San Francisco that works to alleviate poverty worldwide, Byer sought out people who live on the brink of survival — on a dollar a day. Her beautiful and searing photographs along with the personal stories Byer gathered, give a voice to those who would not otherwise be heard.

Realism in Rawiya: Photographic Stories from the Middle East

Rawiya, which translates from Arabic to mean ‘she who tells a story’, is made up of artists who established their individual careers as photojournalists by working for news agencies and publications across the Arab world. By living and reporting in the region, they gained an insider’s view of the extremities of these settings, whilst also observing how their reportage could become reframed in the international media’s final edit of events.
Realism in Rawiya is rich with untold stories, from a Palestinian all-female auto racing team and transsexuals in Jerusalem, to cluster bomb survivors trying to rebuild their lives, Iranian mothers of martyrs who visit their son’s grave twice a week and parents in Lebanon who continue to wait for the 17,000 missing to come home.

A new exhibition showcasing the work of its first ever Open Call, launched last October to artists across the world. Twenty final images selected from some 2000 international entries are now on display at the gallery. The Open Call will become a yearly feature, and each competition will be juried by a single person exercising a unique and consistent vision. This year’s Open Call has been juried by British Journal of Photography writer Gemma Padley.

Simon Norfolk – Stratographs

In October 2014, Norfolk traveled to Kenya to record the dramatic decline of the Lewis Glacier, which has been receding for the past eighty years. Using old maps and modern GPS surveys, Norfolk charted the glacier’s previous boundaries, then set his camera for hour-long exposures and walked the former outline while carrying a petroleum torch. The resulting images enclose the diminished glacier in a fiery border, as if Norfolk is inscribing the epitaph of the glacier on the earth itself. Fire is juxtaposed against ice, yet the dominant images are of earth and air, which are all that will remain after “the poor, doomed glacier” has completely melted.

Stacy Kranitz: From the Study on Post-Pubescent Manhood

Kranitz’s work seeks to assert a distinct continuity between violence and catharsis. She is specifically concerned with defining a validatory purpose for violent acts. By connecting the antisocial to the related emotional release, she clarifies such behavior as not only human, but necessary. Kranitz takes on the unruliness of humanity, and submits it to order.
