DAVE HEATH @ Howard Greenberg Gallery

Dave Heath, Washington Square, New York City, c.1960

Dave Heath, Washington Square, New York City, c.1960

DAVE HEATH
SEPTEMBER 10—OCTOBER 24, 2015

Dave Heath’s expressive and emotionally charged photographs capture intimate moments of beauty and loss, love and alienation, with lone figures gazing into the distance, soldiers trudging through foreign lands, urban scenes of heightened sensation and faces frozen in time. On view at Howard Greenberg Gallery will be Heath’s photographs from the Korean War and the Beat Generation era in Greenwich Village, pages from his thematic notebooks mounted with tiny prints, and work that was included in his seminal 1965 book A Dialogue with Solitude, a poignant collection of images that explores the human psyche in chiaroscuro tones. A key figure in 20th-century photography, adept in delineating details and dissolving others, Heath is known as a master printmaker with a deep and atmospheric palette.

The Museum Project 2012-2015
September 12 – October 31, 2015

“In 2012, I felt compelled to express my appreciation to the Museums and Universities that had long supported me in my career as an Artist and University Art Professor. My idea was, in gratitude, to donate works of art to institutions that would welcome these additions to their permanent collections. A group of like-minded artists, also willing to make donations, was mobilized, and The Museum Project was born.” – Robert von Sternberg.

LYNN SAVILLE @ PRATT INSTITUTE’S PHOTOGRAPHY GALLERY

unnamedLYNN SAVILLE: DARK CITY A RETROSPECTIVE PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION
AUGUST 21 – OCTOBER 2, 2015

CLOSING RECEPTION AND GALLERY TALK WITH THE ARTIST OCTOBER 1, 2015 FROM 6:00 – 8:00 PM

In the monograph Dark City, Saville takes us deep into the urban landscape of New York and other American cities at twilight and dawn when busy city streets are quiet and empty of people, except for the occasional lone figure or the artist herself, visible as ghosted images of shadows. The darkened city is Saville’s stage set where dramatic lighting and architectural components form otherworldly places that she captures with her medium format camera.

Last Samurai @ THE LUMIERE BROTHERS CENTER FOR PHOTOGRAPHY

unnamed
Last Samurai
September 9 – November 15

The Lumiere Brothers Center for Photography and Japan Camera Industry Institute are pleased to present an exhibition tracing the history of the first Japanese mission overseas that initiated transition of Japan from being an agrarian country to the one of the world-leading states. The Tokugawa Shogun diplomatic mission coincided with demise of the Edo period followed by the Meiji Restoration that phased out feudal class system, including samurai, upon their return to Japan. The exhibition will feature more than hundred photographs of the “last samurai” who spread knowledge of foreign countries and made an effort for the modernization of Japan.
