extra{ordinary} Photographs of Britain by The Caravan Gallery
29 May to 29 August 2015

In an alternative to the picturesque and often clichéd images found in tourist information brochures, the artists, Jan Williams and Chris Teasdale, seek out the curious, unusual and absurd in the places they visit. The artists say, ‘The Caravan Gallery doesn’t airbrush out Portaloos, and we’re as likely to photograph tanning salons as thatched cottages’.

The Caravan Gallery itself is an innovative photography gallery-on-wheels. Since 2000, Williams and Teasdale have travelled thousands of miles, taking their iconic 1969 mustard-coloured caravan to locations across Britain from London’s Tate Britain to the small fishing port of Peterhead in the North East of Scotland, in a quest to share their photographs and inspire others.

unnamed-1JI YEO : It Will Hurt A Little
April 30 – May 16, 2015

Opening Reception April 30, 2015 | 6 – 8pm

he It Will Hurt A Little project introduces interiors of plastic surgery clinics in Seoul. The lens explores clinics from luxurious receptions to employee-only zones-all while the clinic is empty, with no patients in the building except in recovery rooms. For over a decade, Ji Yeo has witnessed the plastic surgery industry in South Korea grow dramatically. Like many Koreans, her interest in cosmetic surgery began at a young age, with a desire to have procedures done on herself. Since then, cosmetic surgery has come to be treated more as a necessary routine than as a carefully considered option. South Koreans now have more plastic surgery than any other nation in the world, with more than one in five South Korean women having had cosmetic work done. In a global industry of tens of millions of procedures worth tens of billions of dollars per year, South Korea is a global hub. And it’s growing fast: according to the Korea Health Industry Development Institute, the number of people traveling to Korea for medical tourism is approaching 300,000 per year, and is still growing at a staggering yearly rate of 30%.

gregers heering: MAJESTIC
April 24th

In January 2014, acclaimed Danish author Kirsten Jacobsen and photographer Gregers Heering embarked on a 32 day-long journey aboard MAJESTIC, the largest ship in the world. The route took them from Hong Kong, around Asia, across the Indian Ocean, through the high-risk waters by the Somalian coast, the Red Sea, the Suez canal and finally into the Mediterranean where they eventually stepped foot on solid ground, in Algeciras, Spain. Later, Jacobsen and Heering also visited Majestic’s “birth place”, the ship yard in Korea.

A Sense of Community: Exploring place through Documentary Photography
Harvard-Westlake Students AND Humanitas Academy of Art & Technology Students
May 16 – June 20, 2015

Opening Reception: May 16, 6 – 8 pm

Photography students have joined forces to tell an important story about the tale of their two diametrically divergent communities. Students from the private prep school, Harvard-Westlake, are collaborating with students from the Humanitas Academy of Art and Technology (HAAT), a public high school in East LA, to make a 21st century, vibrant documentary portrait of where “we” live – covering a wide range of territory from wealthy suburbs to urban blue-collar and under-privileged neighborhoods.
