Keith Sharp @ The Print Center

unnamedKeith Sharp: Double Take
April 17 – July 11, 2015

Keith Sharp: Double Take brings together recent photographs from two series by the artist. InFabrications, Sharp prints photographic scenes of nature onto cotton or silk, which he then installs as curtains in an interior and re-photographs. The resulting images create uncanny juxtapositions between the interior spaces and the landscape imagery which appears on the curtains.

Henry Horenstein @ New Orleans Photo Alliance

Henry Horenstein: Honky Tonk – Portraits of Country Music
April 23rd – May 31st

Opening Reception/Book Signing: Thursday April 23rd, 6:30-9pm

Honky Tonk is a collection of photographs taken between 1968 and 2010 that document the changing world of country music and its fans. Shot in bars, music ranches and famous venues like Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, Horenstein not only shows us the performers on stage, but also the dedication and love the fans have for the performers and the music. Of the Project Horenstein says, “all along, in my historian’s mind, I always saw this as a disappearing world that I wanted to preserve on film.” As such, Horenstein began this project at a time when he saw the world of country music changing, and wanted to capture it as it was before it turned into the big-business that it is today. “I expect that everyone will remember mega stars like Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, but I wonder: Will they remember Kitty Wells, Ernest Tubb, or, for that matter, Hillbilly Tex? These pictures were made in hopes that they will,” says Horenstein

unnamed-1ROBERT FRANK Park/Sleep & Partida
April 30 – June 13, 2015

Opening reception: Thursday, April 30, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Celebrated as one of the most important and influential photographers of the 20th century, Frank has consistently embraced the narrative potential of carefully composed photographic sequences. His search for “a more sustained form of expression” than the single, static image has resulted in compelling visual stories that actively engage viewers with their deliberately designed progression, compression of time, and layered meanings. Undoubtedly, Frank’s best known sequence is The Americans, a seminal suite of 83 photographs from 1955-56 cross-country road trips that presents a penetrating portrait of post-war American life. Revolutionary in both subject matter and style, The Americans was also formally innovative, as Frank discerningly selected and arranged just 83 images from some 27,000 frames to illustrate his distinct vision of America. Moreover, he allowed the pictures to speak for themselves, employing their titles as the only form of didactic text.

PATRICIA VOULGARIS Hidden in Plain Sight
April 2 – 25, 2015

In her series Hidden in Plain Sight, Voulgaris creates studio constructions with common objects that interact with the human form. These carefully layered constructions are transformed in Photoshop using specific digital tools that mimic postproduction manipulations. Through her playful usage of space, she creates graphical photographs that are obscured and often abstracted. They are intricately composed images that create a glitch between the tangible and the fabricated. She further explores this concept by mimicking the artist’s ability to draw simple forms and lines on paper. These forms and lines are then translated into a digital space by Voulgaris through the usage of popular Photoshop tools such as the brush, pencil and magic wand. The viewer is left with remnants of a language that has been manipulated and reinvented by the artist herself.
