“I first met her on Twitter, then later in person. Wanting nothing but fun, she told me off… I met her again at an ice cream shoppe. She charmed me with her happy ice cream dance.”
Raneen and Hisham were both previously married and divorced. Now married to each other, they realize their mistakes.
“We didn’t believe in love, and were too cynical. We also thought of marriage as a duty. After we stopped searching for the one, that’s when we met each other.”

TASNEEM ALSULTAN: Saudi Tales of Love
Tuesday 13 February until 13 March 2018

opening reception Tuesday 13 February 7:30pm

“Saudi Tales of Love began as a reflection on her own personal story; Married at the age of 17 and becoming a mother at 21, Tasneem found herself living as a single parent for the last six years of an unhappy ten year marriage. She was divorced by the age of 27. She soon found herself interviewing and photographing other women who shared similar experiences. Saudi Tales of Love explores the stories of these women, who challenge the taboos and dictates of excepted society in Saudi Arabia. Their stories include courageous choices that involve marriage, divorce and other difficult personal experiences. ”

Clicky White, Biscuit Women

Thursday 22 February until Sunday 25 February

Opening Night Thursday 22 February (6:30-8:30pm)

“Collaborating with 9 artists who work in a variety of mediums, ‘ODD SPACE’ is an organic show that has grown out of the desire to celebrate process and enable development in an informal environment.

Some of the artists are using this exhibition as an opportunity to show works in progress, whilst others are using this as a testing space to show supporting material that would not normally get exposure in a gallery context. Further still, some of the artists are proposing to create works within the space itself.

Kevin Shick @ Camerawork Gallery

Kevin Shick: The Commuters
March 3-30

“This series of candid portraits depicts the daily lives of commuters on the Rock Island train line in Chicago. They are windows into each rider’s personal outlook and the experiences that may have created that outlook. But unexpectedly, they also deliver a stunning insight into how much we are all creatures of habit, and much alike in spite of our differences.”

Zanele Muholi @ Fotografiska

Zanele Muholi: Somnyama Ngonyama, Hail the Dark Lioness
9 February – 1 April

“In Somnyama Ngonyama, ready-made objects and found materials are transformed into culturally loaded props, merging the political with the aesthetic – often commenting on specific events in South Africa’s recent history. Scouring pads and latex gloves address themes of domestic servitude, while simultaneously alluding to sexual politics, violence and the suffocating prisms of gendered identity. Rubber tires, electrical cords or cable ties reference forms of social brutality and capitalist exploitation, and powerfully evoke the plight of workers – maids, miners and members of the disenfranchised communities. Using different artefacts – from chopsticks, can lids and safety pins to plastic bags or polythene wrapping – Muholi draws attention to urgent environmental issues and toxic waste. Accessories such as cowrie shells or beads highlight Western fascinations with clichéd, exoticised representations of African cultures and people as well as the global economies of migration, commerce and labour.”

Tania & Lazlo @ Ségolène Brossette Galerie

Tania & Lazlo – Le Temps d’un silence
March 8th – May 12th 2018

“”Le temps d’un silence is an aside, the moment that the artists, Tania and Lazlo, fix in time through their series Behind the Visible and The Essence of Decadence. They are scenes of life, through different epochs, which transcribe the more or less conscious state of mind of an entire generation. Tania and Lazlo tell us a story with many levels of interpretation.”

In Their Own Form @ Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago

Alun Be, Potentiality

In Their Own Form
April 12—July 8, 2018

“In Their Own Form at the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago seeks to illuminate the myriad ways blackness might hope to exist without the imposition of oppression, racism and stereotypes ever-present in Western cultures, mediated through Afrofuturist themes including time-travel and escapism. Afrofuturism refers to a cross-disciplinary genre that combines science fiction, Afrocentrism, fantasy, technology, and non-Western mythologies as an intellectual and artistic strategy to reimagine and repurpose the fraught past, present, and future of the transnational black experience. Bringing together 13 artists and over 40 photographic and video works that negotiate a range of Afro-Diasporic experiences, In Their Own Form prefaces personhood, both fantastical and actual, over perceived realities.”
