J. M. Golding: From destruction grows a garden of the soul

“In September 2013, the a fire ravaged over 3,000 acres of California mountain wilderness. Walking through this charred terrain brought back the loss of an important relationship several years earlier that, in a startling synchronicity, had coincided with a fire in the foothills. That loss had come with a prediction that the land would heal – a prediction that had been difficult to believe on an emotional level. Photographs of the burn area show the bleakness and devastation that remained after the Morgan Fire, a landscape of loss. There are subtle signs of hope, easy to miss, and perhaps requiring more interpretation than is justified.”
