Kevin Cooley: Still Burning
February 24th – April 7th, 2018

Opening Reception Saturday, February 24th 6 – 8pm

“Consisting of photographs, video, and a Twitter-based project, the show references political smokescreens, environmental degradation, and the regeneration that hopefully follows any tragedy. Some of the conflagration is intentional and under his control – thick clouds of colored smoke obscure the landscape, or appear to consume natural beauty, such as wildflower super blooms. Exhaust clouds from the Space X Falcon 9 launch present a larger example of human control of fire.”

February 20—April 1, 2018

“Sarah Blesener’s ongoing work examines the interplay of religion, love of country, and military-style training in the teaching of ‘new Americanism’ among youth across the United States. Over the last year, Blesener photographed patriotic clubs and camps in twelve states to discover this renewed embrace of the centuries-old theme of American exceptionalism and manifest destiny. Here, in this microcosm of a changing nation, youth straddle the vulnerability of adolescence and the simultaneous stripping of individuality. Blesener’s aim for the series is to open dialogue around the nuanced and complicated ideals instilled in the future generation of Americans. The work on display is part of her ongoing series, Beckon Us From Home.”

“I first met her on Twitter, then later in person. Wanting nothing but fun, she told me off… I met her again at an ice cream shoppe. She charmed me with her happy ice cream dance.”
Raneen and Hisham were both previously married and divorced. Now married to each other, they realize their mistakes.
“We didn’t believe in love, and were too cynical. We also thought of marriage as a duty. After we stopped searching for the one, that’s when we met each other.”

TASNEEM ALSULTAN: Saudi Tales of Love
Tuesday 13 February until 13 March 2018

opening reception Tuesday 13 February 7:30pm

“Saudi Tales of Love began as a reflection on her own personal story; Married at the age of 17 and becoming a mother at 21, Tasneem found herself living as a single parent for the last six years of an unhappy ten year marriage. She was divorced by the age of 27. She soon found herself interviewing and photographing other women who shared similar experiences. Saudi Tales of Love explores the stories of these women, who challenge the taboos and dictates of excepted society in Saudi Arabia. Their stories include courageous choices that involve marriage, divorce and other difficult personal experiences. ”

Thursday 22 February until Sunday 25 February

Opening Night Thursday 22 February (6:30-8:30pm)

“Collaborating with 9 artists who work in a variety of mediums, ‘ODD SPACE’ is an organic show that has grown out of the desire to celebrate process and enable development in an informal environment.

Some of the artists are using this exhibition as an opportunity to show works in progress, whilst others are using this as a testing space to show supporting material that would not normally get exposure in a gallery context. Further still, some of the artists are proposing to create works within the space itself.

Kevin Shick: The Commuters
March 3-30

“This series of candid portraits depicts the daily lives of commuters on the Rock Island train line in Chicago. They are windows into each rider’s personal outlook and the experiences that may have created that outlook. But unexpectedly, they also deliver a stunning insight into how much we are all creatures of habit, and much alike in spite of our differences.”
