Monique Relova @ Albumen Gallery

Monique Relova:Sridevi and Friends, Portrait of a Hijra Community
May 15th – July 15th

“In 2006 Monique Relova spent time with a transgender community near Bangalore in southern India for her project ‘Hijra’.

In many western countries the discussion of transgender rights is very topical – the last frontier in the battle for equal rights. In South Asia, particularly Pakistan, India and Bangladesh Hijras are officially recognised as third gender. In fact, Hijras have a recorded history on the Indian subcontinent going back to antiquity.

After overcoming initial hurdles of acceptance as an outsider Monique Relova was accepted by the community and gained their trust. This allowed her to photograph them in their daily life. Monique’s portraits convey an overriding sense of pride maintained despite the many challenges and struggles Sridevi and Friends face on a daily basis.”

Magnum Manifesto
May 26 – September 3, 2017

“A landmark photography exhibition at the ICP Museum celebrating the 70th anniversary of the renowned photo agency. Curators Clément Chéroux and Clara Bouveresse demonstrate how Magnum Photos owes its pre-eminence to the ability of its photographers to encompass and navigate the points between photography as art object and photography as documentary evidence. Featuring group and individual projects, this comprehensive exhibition—and accompanying book publication by Thames & Hudson—includes magazine spreads, newspaper features, and letters, putting some of the world’s most recognizable images in creative context. Sponsored by Canon.”

TOM BIANCHI @ Throckmorton Fine Art

TOM BIANCHI FIRE ISLAND PINES: Polaroids 1975-1983
June 29 – Sept 16, 2017

Every emerging minority needs not only a record of its grievances but also an idealized image of its expectations.
Tom Bianchi has given us one version of gay happiness – an earthly paradise where handsome men love one another on white sands under an eternally cloudless sky.
These photographs are at once formal and intimate, for they bring both rigor and tenderness to glimpses of real people. – Edmund White

Like a Horse Group Exhibition
19 May–3 September

“Our relationship with the horse is as multifaceted as it is fascinating and ancient, exquisitely depicted in prehistoric cave paintings. And when Eadweard Muybridge in the 19th century perfected the photographic technique he chose to capture, among other things, the movements of the horse. Muybridge’s famous series forms part of the new exhibition Like a Horse.

Comprising some 30 photographers, this group exhibition with the horse as its common denominator reflects our relationship with this powerful, spiritual, beautiful and hard-working animal.”

Tom Arndt: Where I Live
May 25 – July 7, 2017

“Tom Arndt: Where I Live features more than 35 photographs from 2015 to 2016, which capture the character of Arndt’s native Minnesota (as well as North Dakota and Montana). He portrays everyday citizens — in their coffee shops and soda fountains, their streets, their parks, and at state fairs. A consistently resourceful street photographer, Arndt captures fleeting gestures and momentary juxtapositions between people and their surroundings, finding in them a sense of emotional or psychological depth. Author and radio personality Garrison Keillor has written of Arndt’s work, “They possess the crucial DNA of our culture.””

ROGER BALLEN @ camara oscura galeria de arte

ROGER BALLEN “Introspective”
25th May – 29th July 2017

Opening: Thursday 25th at 8.00 pm

“Introspective” is the first retrospective exhibition by Roger Ballen in Madrid. In this project we have selected three of his most iconic series -”Outland, “Shadow Chamber” and his most recent “Boarding House”- in order to create a hallucinatory and enigmatic itinerary of one of the most personal and singular visions in contemporary photography. Throughout his career Ballen has developed what we could call a voyage of discovery in which we must abandon our everyday self to face the most primitive side of the human condition and of our own psyche.
