The Sochi Project: An Atlas of War and Tourism in the Caucasus

The photographer Rob Hornstra and writer Arnold van Bruggen began in 2009 her documentary photo project about the region around Sochi in Russia, the Winter Olympic Games 2014. “Never before Olympic Games were held in a region, which are in greater contrast to the games than in Sochi . the conflict zone Abkhazia is situated in a mere twenty miles away. In the East, the Caucasus Mountains extend into the impoverished breakaway republics such as North Ossetia and Chechnya. Along the coast the old sanatoriums from Soviet times, stand side by side with the hotels and clubs most expensive the Russian Riviera. By 2014, the region will have changed beyond recognition to Sochi “said Arnold van Bruggen.
Hornstras photographic approach and Van Bruggens engaging stories about people, land and the eventful history of both combine to form a “slow journalism”, which seeks to have a basic understanding of this small but incredibly complicated region. Images and texts together to create complex and multifaceted background of this troubled region and cast a harsh light on Vladimir Putin’s desire that the “Olympic family in Sochi will feel at home.”
